A Decent Set Of Filters By flight3 After 2 weeks of using them I am very satisfied with the purchase. Even though the filters are made of plastic and feel cheap, they aren't that bad. One thing that I read most people had problems with is putting the filters into the holder, and I agreed at first until I realized that I needed to hold the holder from the bottom as I placed the filter in. Or else I would be squeezing the holder, which was making it harder to put the filters in. So I have no problem with putting them in the holder now.
Here are the pros: * The biggest question I had when purchasing these was "how much will these filters degrade my lens quality?" And from what I can see, they don't degrade very much if at all. I have used them on my kit 18-55mm lens and my 70-200 2.8 lens and they both seem just as sharp (FYI I am shooting with a Nikon D3100, so not a high end camera like a D800).
* Additionally, the holder and rings do work well. The rings, as others have said, are metal, but the holder and hood are plastic, which is fine with me because they don't feel fragile. The wallet case is a great addition because I am able to place it in my current camera bag, while keeping the filters safe.
Here are the cons: * The Grad NDs can leave a magenta cast depending how strong the light source shines in your picture. And I have found that the full NDs give the entire picture a magenta shade most of the time. But that was expected when I purchased these, and I have been able to easily fix the full NDs magenta cast in Post-Processing, but the Grad ND's are a little more work.
* Flares are one thing I did not think about when I bought these, and sadly they do show up at times. I didn't notice it until after a few days, but when in direct sunlight of the sun or if it is just peeking into the frame, flares might appear. Now I have used the filter hood, but I really haven't noticed a difference with it on. (sidenote: the hood is a little hard to put on and take off.)
* One small annoyance is that putting the lens holder on the 77mm ring is a little tight, but not a huge problem.
All in all I am happy with these filters because you really can't beat the price of $35 for all that you get. Although I am thinking about purchasing higher quality ones later on depending how often flares show up in my shots. But for the most part I have gotten good results and taken pictures that would not have turned out as well without them. I have uploaded pictures of a photo without a filter and the same scene with a filter. So you can take a look for yourself how much they can help. 18 of 21 people found the following review helpful. Don't buy this for the Filters By Michael D. * * Some background first, I am a professional who uses cameras in the film industry. I use landscape photography as a way to relax while I'm trekking the backcountry. Composing shots with filters, vs. trying to fake the effects on a computer later is an art form that I very much enjoy. I'm writing this review, because I winced when I read that someone was using this with a Canon L-Series lens. I shoot with Canon professional bodies and lenses, shooting most of my work by manually focusing. * *
I bought this set off of eBay for the step-down rings. I needed a cheap set for my array of manual focus primes that wouldn't break the bank (think $17 a ring, vs $20 for an entire set). I typically use wider lenses with an array of ND, graduated ND and graduated effects glass filters. There are some great resin (plastic cast) filters that won't break the bank, I just choose to buy glass because of their investment value and use in film.
Looking at the filters that came with the rings, you can see that there are some problems. This is just from an initial observation.
- They are not precise. Look through them with the naked eye, and all four edges are bending light. Either they cooled unevenly, or were cut under pressure with a die. This would lead me to believe that the optics throughout are compromised.
- The edges are untreated. This allows for inner reflections under most situations where you would use graduated ND filters, i.e. photographing harsh light.
- The casting is varied. You can see color casting (ND filters are supposed to be neutral) that varies from magenta to green. This will not help with chromatic aberration or white balance.
- They feel very cheap. I wouldn't image much would need to happen to scratch a filter, and make it instantly worthless.
DON'T BUY THIS SET FOR THE FILTERS
Because color casting isn't an issue on color graduated effects filters, I'm sure a set of Goja color filters would be a fun addition to toy around with and experiment for someone on a budget. I cannot recommend these filters, even to someone experimenting with the usage of ND filters. They need to be neutral, or at least very close to neutral, especially on graduated filters.
With sharp lenses, you will get softer images, with chromatic aberration (colored fringes on edges in the photo) and likely ghosting and flares. They scratch easy and make it difficult to color correct, or white balance. These filters are likely to leave you with poor impression on using physical filters.
If you own professional equipment, and plan to take photos using these, at least buy a set of Lee resin filters. I recommend getting a set that is rectangular so you can adjust the horizon line, and get the full experience of using graduated ND filters.
Why would you use $3 worth of plastic with a $1200 professional lens? That's like putting 4 space-saver spare tires on a sports car. You should know better.
Now as for the rings, they're cheap. If I damage one, I won't be sad. They're matte black, thread easily, weigh nothing, and can be tossed in my bag for if and when I need to use my filter holder, or screw-mount filters with any of my lenses. 4-stars for value, and 2-stars for quality on the rings.
Buy for the rings, not for the filters. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Decent Filters! By MeisterASV Received the item the other day, already took it out to the field!
I was not expecting much really, only reason I went for it was to get to understand the world of density filters since I've been into landscape photography for a while hoping to save for the quite expensive B+W filters (I am all into great glass in front of my considerably expensive lens) and of course, I was not too eager of the idea of having cheap plastic/glass degrading the picture quality. Still, went for this $34.99 just for learning purposes AND for the good quality filter holer, filter hood and adapter rings set that can be used with more expensive square filters in the future.
Well, I was surprised!
The actual filters are made out of plastic, good plastic. I see them getting easily scratched if not taking care of properly. They all come in on their own protective plastic case which you can then organize on it's own 6 filter wallet case. It's a little hard to place them into the holder (filters gotta be slightly forced into the filter holder to get into place) but once in, I strongly suggest cleaning it up with a microfiber cloth before shooting since they get dirty with finger prints marks easily.
It slightly degrades picture quality of course, but it does it's job! I don't expect to use these too much unless doing slow shutter speeds during the day (mostly involving bodies of water) or if I see the need to use a huge aperture in the middle of a bright, sunny day. It did a decent job, better than expected and it totally serves the purpose of allowing you to learn how to use them, when to use them and how to work out with your camera settings. You can use up to three filters at once in the filter holder, which is quite neat.
Overall, a great investment! Better than expected. Gave it four stars due to the need for using brute force in order to place the filters into the filter holder which can be a problem when adding a second filter while the filter holder is already in place on your camera lens. I recommend removing the entire thing when adding or removing (removing is even worse) a filter in the holder. If they were to slide into the holder with ease, it would had gotten five glowing stars as a score!
Here's an example of a test picture taken using two of these filters at the same time (the darkest ones) It was taken during a bright, sunny day with a low shutter speed of 1/2 second and a small aperture of F22, ISO 100 for better quality. It came out considerably well, but due to the sun been right above me, there were some visible beams of light I could not notice with the viewfinder. Proper post editing can easily take care of the problem.
